Room 11 STEM challenge 26th Jun

As part of our intergrated whole class learning on a Friday we have started STEM challenges. This is where curriculum areas of science, technology, engineering, maths are intergrated to solve problems.

The kids were tasked with building the tallest tower that would support a glue stick. They had 15 sheets of paper, 1.5 mtr of cellotape and 1 mtr of string. They had a time limit of 20 minutes. They had 5 minutes planning time first where they were not allowed to write, only oral discussion,  It was alot of fun.

Wierd and Wacky Mufti Day Room 11.

Room 11 STEM challenge 3rd July

This time the kids were to create the same tower using dried spaghetti. They had 25 pieces of spaghetti, 1.5 mtr of cellotape, some blu tak, and 1 mtr of string. This time their tower had to support a marshmellow.

Term 3 Science Inquiry
24th July - Dancing Raisins

We were learning about some chemistry. We learnt about H2O and CO2 and how carbonated water made our raisins rise to the surface. We learnt how carbonated bubbles attach to the raisin and once at the surface the air makes the bubbles begin to pop and so they loose buoyancy and sink back down. Then again further bubbles attach and the raisin will rise again. This is how our experiment is named "dancing raisins".

The kids did the experiment in pairs and then followed up with a written activity to consolidate their learning.
